Out of Comfort Zone: What the North Pole and AI Have in Common
Dear Friends,
As I write this newsletter, I am preparing for one of the most ambitious adventures of my life: a record attempt at the North Pole this July.

This is not just another swim.
The Arctic Ocean is one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. The water temperature will be around -1°C, with drifting sea ice, unpredictable weather, and a very real risk that most swimmers will never have to think about: polar bears.
For safety reasons, our expedition team will be accompanied by armed polar bear guards and a physician. In this environment, nature sets the rules. There are no guarantees, no shortcuts, and no room for complacency.
Yet this is exactly why I am drawn to challenges like this.
Because every time we step into uncertainty, we discover who we truly are.
Over the past months, while preparing for this expedition, I have also been leading several leadership development programs with PMI in TĂĽrkiye, working with project leaders and professionals navigating a very different kind of challenge.
Together, we explored topics such as:
- Leading effectively through uncertainty and change
- Building trust and psychological safety within teams
- Communication under pressure
- Managing stress and maintaining peak performance
- Overcoming limiting beliefs and fears
- Developing courage as a leadership competency
- Creating environments where people can thrive, grow, and perform at their best
Although the settings could not be more different—a freezing Arctic Ocean and a corporate training room—the underlying question remains exactly the same:
How do we respond when faced with the unknown?
Today, AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented speed.
Many leaders feel excited. Others feel overwhelmed.
Some resist change.
Some wait until they feel ready.
The most successful individuals and organisations do something different:
- They stay curious.
- They continue learning.
- And they take action before certainty arrives.
This connects deeply with one of the most important lessons I have learned through extreme swimming, leadership development, and life itself:
Fear is not always a stop sign. Often, it is a compass.
The situations that challenge us the most often contain the greatest opportunity for growth.
The North Pole will not test my swimming ability alone.
It will test my mindset.
My ability to stay calm in uncertainty.
My capacity to focus on what I can control and let go of what I cannot.
The same is true for leadership, business, parenting, entrepreneurship, and navigating a world increasingly shaped by AI.
Growth rarely happens when conditions are perfect.
Growth happens when we move forward despite uncertainty.
So I would like to leave you with a reflection:
- What is one opportunity, conversation, decision, or challenge you have been postponing because it feels uncomfortable?
- What would happen if you took one small step toward it this week?
Because confidence rarely comes before action.
More often, confidence is built by taking action.
