Is Joy Possible in the Midst of Challenge?

What is the formula for not feeling pain and suffering?
It’s acceptance and surrender — instead of resistance and trying to control everything.

You have an important business meeting? An application process for something bigger? You’re in the middle of a big change or challenge and feel nervous?

Stop resisting. Breathe. Trust.

How can you feel joy even when everything is unknown — and you know it will be challenging?

That’s the question I’ve been sitting with as I prepare to give birth.

Birth is not about control. It is about surrender.

It is not about predicting every detail. It is about acceptance.

It is about being ready for the unknown, the pain, the uncontrollable — and still opening yourself to the joy and the magic that come with it.

I’ve been here before, in different forms.

When I prepared to swim the English Channel, I trained for years. I studied the currents, built physical strength, visualized the swim. I prepared for every possible scenario. But the truth is: once I stepped into the water, I had to let go. The Channel is unpredictable. All I could do was trust myself, my team, and the process — and find a way to embrace the cold, the discomfort, and the fear.

It’s the same with birth. Preparation gives us confidence, but the real power lies in being present when the moment comes. In choosing not to fight the discomfort, but to feel it fully — and to discover the joy within it.

This lesson extends far beyond swimming or childbirth.

Whenever we stand before a major challenge — a new career step, a speech in front of hundreds, a leap into the unknown — we prepare as best we can. But at some point, preparation must give way to trust. To presence. To surrender.

Because the ultimate choice is ours:

We can resist and suffer — or we can accept, lean in, and even find joy in the challenge.

Key Messages to Carry With You

  • True strength lies not only in preparation but in surrender.
  • Discomfort can be transformed into joy when we choose acceptance.
  • Every great challenge — whether swimming the Channel, giving birth, or stepping into a new life chapter — is an invitation to trust yourself and the process.

⸻

Reflective Questions

  • Where in your life are you trying to control every detail instead of trusting the process?
  • How could you shift from resistance to acceptance in your current challenge?
  • What would it feel like to embrace discomfort not as suffering, but as part of the magic of growth?

Why Knowing What to Do Isn’t Always Enough
Dear friends, We are already living outside our comfort zones. Change, uncertainty and constant pressure have become part of everyday life. The question is no longer simply: “How can I step outside my comfort zone?” The deeper question is: “How can I feel grounded in discomfort, navigate uncertainty and still access my inner Peak Flow?” Often, what stands between us and our next level is not a ...
The Arctic Didn't Test My Strength. It Tested My Trust.
Dear Friends, A few weeks ago, I stood at the edge of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by glaciers, moments before stepping into 4°C water. People often ask me what the hardest part was. Was it the cold? The distance? The polar bears? None of them. The hardest part was letting go of control. As a mother, leaving my daughter safely on shore while I entered the Arctic Ocean was far more difficult tha...
Out of Comfort Zone: What the North Pole and AI Have in Common
Dear Friends, As I write this newsletter, I am preparing for one of the most ambitious adventures of my life: a record attempt at the North Pole this July. This is not just another swim. The Arctic Ocean is one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. The water temperature will be around -1°C, with drifting sea ice, unpredictable weather, and a very real risk that most swimmers will neve...
